Anyone can be a hero; they just need to have the courage to help people who need it. I conclude that a hero is someone who helps someone else and puts others’ needs before their own. Ponyboy and Johnny were heroes, however, Dally was not. If you have the courage to, you can be a hero, just like Pony and Johnny were.

Ponyboy is a hero because he helped the children in the church when no one else would. Other people recognized his heroism and acknowledged it. One person said,“Mrs. O’Briant and I think you were sent from heaven. Or are you just professional heroes or something?”(p.95) People thought that Pony had saved people before, and they believed that he could have come from heaven, and they made sure that they told him. People also realized that they did not just “become” heroes, they had been heroes all along. Another person said,“Y’all were heroes from the beginning. You didn't just ‘turn’ all of a sudden,”(p.107) when he recognized that they had always been heroes. Pony was a hero even before he saved the children from the church, even if it was just small acts of kindness that made him one; he did not

He would try to cause trouble for others. He tried to entice others into doing the wrong thing, too. Pony said that, “He liked to show that he didn’t care whether there was a law or not.”(p.20) when they snuck into the movies. He did not care if he got arrested because he thought that it was worth causing the trouble. He did not care for many people. The only person he cared for was Johnny, and when Johnny died, Dally got so mad, that he robbed a store, which ended in his death. Pony said,“The fight for self-preservation had hardened him against caring.”(p.59) which was true, with the exception of Johnny. He was almost physically incapable of caring for people. He had wanted to die so he could be with Johnny, who was the one person he cared
