Gardner does seem to show Grendel being evil, but also points out the evilness of the world making us question Grendel. Is he really evil when looking at the so called “protagonist” of this story? Of course, there may be contrary belief that Grendel does not possess an evil nature, but when using a standard principle in the world we live in today, evil can be found in abundance in this book.…

Amir, our protagonist, is a very flawed character, with so many things wrong with him even though we must root for him, which could be an entirely different essay in itself. Baba is built up so much throughout the book, but turns out to be a fraud. He has a secret that he feels guilty about his whole life, which causes him to act the way he does. There are other characters like Sohrab (who has had many terrible things happen to him), Soraya (a seemingly good character who has committed sins in the past), and Assef (who is pure evil himself).…

Tarell El Masri Dr. Greenberg Religion 125 Theodicy and The Book of Job The book of Job is one of the most well-known and controversial of the books of wisdom in the Hebrew Bible, believed to be written between the 7th and 4th centuries BCE. The story not only questioned the conventional wisdom of the time, but provides the framework for addressing the issues of theodicy and man’s attempts to rectify the intrinsic good/omnipotent nature of god with their suffering. The story of Job shows that the scales of God’s justice are not necessarily balanced towards the righteous, with the wicked and evil being allowed to live prosperous lives.…
