Is It Worth The Cost Of Human Life?

Improved Essays
If we were to put a value on life we would have to consider the fact that in the future we might be put in a position where we decide how much we are willing to spend so that a human life is saved. Frank partnoy mentions in his article, “ The cost of human life statistically speaking”, “If a human life is worth $8million, how much should we pay today to prevent an event that would result in the loss of ten billion human lives in 500 years” Placing a value on life always leads to the question “why not more?” You can not just say that one amount seems fair enough and that that is now to be considered the value of life.

The average human body is worth about one million dollars when it is donated for scientific use (Hamilton). With this being said, there is no doubt that people feel entitled to being paid for contributing to mankind, especially when what is being given is part of their body. In Rebecca Skloot’s book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, there is a great example that regards receiving compensation. Henrietta’s relatives believe they are deserving of some money made from the research done with her cells. Emotions aside, the Lacks family should not receive compensation for Henrietta’s contribution to medical research.…

Values are something all people posses, some people live by them, others just make them up on the fly. Values are something all people learn to appreciate. What does one do with those values when a conflict arises? Most people like to think they follow them at all times, even if it is in a stressful situation, but that is not always the case. Don Marquis’ argument is for the impermissibility of abortion as it is based on the idea that abortion is held to the same regard as “killing an adult human being” due to the fetus having a “future like ours”. Marquis starts off by questioning what makes killing any human being morally wrong? Then, Marquis claims that it is not the “effect on the murderer” or the “effect on the victim’s friends and relatives”, but rather the effect on the victim. He asserts the idea that the “loss of one’s life” is “one of the greatest losses one can suffer” and that the “loss of one’s life deprives one of all the experiences, activities, projects, and enjoyments which would otherwise have constituted one’s future”. This means that by being alive and having…

I personally would not go along with the requests of Milgrim in his research because I do not think its okay to do anything to another human being. Even if I disliked the person I would not wish them any harm; less a person I did not know. Like Milgrim said what if your killing someone that was about to kill one hundred humans beings then in that case is it okay to kill them for that? In my opinion I would totally want to stop this person from doing such thing but I would try to do my best to have a deeper understanding as to why they think its okay to harm other human beings. Milgrims’s research of measuring obedience seemed as if the study was taken too far when the teacher and the experimenter strapped the student who was a older gentleman…

What is a human life worth? Some may say it is worth millions of dollars no matter what. Others might argue that a human’s worth is dependant on who they are, where they came from and what they can do. In Peter Singer’s Article “What Should a Billionaire Give?” he states that many people would be reluctant to even consider putting a fixed rate. It would be unethical to do so, however, he continues with “If we really had to, most of us would agree that the value of human life would be in the millions.”…
