Personal Narrative: Moving To North Carolina

Improved Essays
When I moved to North Carolina in 2015, it ultimately changed my life for the better. When I took that first step away from home, I started a journey that has taught me the ups and downs of life. It ended up giving me the opportunity and means to pursue my dreams and goals. Better yet, without the weight and burden of my family. Though I place that burden upon myself, it was remotely difficult for me to do something for myself without feeling guilty- a habit I’m still struggling to diminish. Some people say I’m a virtuous person for always putting my family’s needs before my own, but it seems that I’m the only one who knows how selfish it really is. Putting my brothers or my mom before my own needs distracted me from facing my own problems and enabled my anxiety of confrontation. I admit that I took advantage of it several times. It was easier to escape into other people’s problems. It was only when I …show more content…
Out of my immediate family, few have gone far in the academic world. My mom went to college for two years to get a degree in the field of psychology. My dad never finished high school. I was determined to be a worthy example to my younger brothers and get a promising education. I’ve always loved to learn new and exciting things, so motivation was no issue. The barrier this time was my internal obligation to be there for my family. I was split apart by the choice to stay close to home, and get caught up in aiding them, or leave my burdens behind, and start my life for myself. My deciding choice was clear. I needed to take this chance for myself. It was worth it. In my eyes, I couldn’t fully help others until I helped myself. I don’t regret my decision, but I do ultimately miss them with all my heart. I keep in touch with them as often as I can, and make sure to let them know how much I love them. They look forward to hearing about my happenings at school, and are proud of all that I have

The day I moved to Georgia, we had been living in Texas for five years when my mom said we were moving to Georgia. I graduated my senior year from high school I thought she was lying, but she said that the VA center down in Texas was awful, and she didn’t like it there anyways, but she really wanted a better VA system. For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

I'm moving to South Carolina to be closer to my mom. My son Charlie loves the thought of moving because we finally will be out of the country and next to neighbors. The neighbor to the left is very inviting, maybe too inviting. She came over and brought us a pie and offered us to come over for dinner, but I made up some excuse to not have to go. I'm not a very friendly person.…

My parents told me we were moving to Cincinnati, Ohio. My heart sank because all my friends were there and all my memories. But, one day my parents told me to go to the grocery store and try to meet new friends in my new neighborhood. I thought it was a terrible idea but, when I got to the checkout with all my food, there was a great guy bagging my items. My heart told me I was in love with him the moment he dropped my mayonnaise and the container hit the tile, and the green cap opened and the smelly liquid came out of the jar all over the freshly cleaned floor.…

My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life. There was rarely a day that I would come home and she would not ask me questions about my homework, asking what I learned in school, or even looked over my homework. As I got older, she made sure I was a part of a college prep program called AVID from 6th-12th grade and that definitely made a difference for me. It helped me understand the importance of continuing your education and how beneficial it can be to succeeding in life.…
