Is It Better To Write Longhands Essay

Its a beautiful Sunday morning and I thought I would try writing with the computer. I have been engaging in this debate in my mind over the past few days: is it better to write longhand or type? Even as I type I find a different skill in motion as my fingers work to capture my thoughts. Its funny, how I am focused more on the method then on content right now. Doing something different is so novel that sometimes the novelty itself eclipses everything. Its strange watching my words appear on the screen and equally strange to see the amazing number of typographical errors – more then I have ever made before. But, let me back up first and explain.

Long ago (not too long ago), I used to write exclusively on the computer and the thought of picking up a pen and writing again was just not present. When I did write longhand it seemed to be cumbersome. It was fine for a grocery list but for anything substantial my wrist ached. Most of my writing was confined to work related documents: manuals, briefs, e-mails,

At first it seemed so cumbersome. It seemed to take forever to get and idea out on to paper and I never was able to keep up with my thoughts. My penmanship was terrible too. My handwriting had atrophied. However, as I pressed on I found along with improving penmanship, a returning ability to organize my thoughts and funnel them on to paper. Its as if I was queuing ideas in my mind and letting them flow in sequence on to paper. While the actual speed of writing was slower, the content came out more organized. Once I let go of misspellings, I was able to just cross words off and move on. I began to remember what it was like in grade school, junior high and high school (even college) when the majority of my writing was in longhand. In short, my wrist did not break and my thoughts did make it to paper! That for me was exciting. To in one way slow down yet still be

In the article “Is a Picture worth a Thousand notes” by Jessica Higgins, she was curious to why most of her students choose other form of note taking rather than the traditional handwriting methods. That lead Higgins students to start a class discussion, one student said “I can’t read my own handwriting”, other students use electronic devices to record notes because they did not want to miss out on class discussion because they were “writing notes”. Some states are trying to bring cursive back into their school learning program, so that kids know how to use cursive. In my opinion, I think that cursive should still be taught in school today so that kids can have cursive to use if they get tired of using regular print in school. First cursive can help by taking notes faster so students will not fall behind and miss any of the notes need to take in college, Next cursive helps the left and right brain cells communicate better, lastly cursive is a skill that everybody will need to know for later in life. Also cursive makes the left and right brain cells work together so each side of your brain works better together. The brain cells working together can help because it can make think harder about stuff because of the cell communication.…

Writing has not been my favorite thing because it takes me ages to complete a single page paper. But for the second assignment, I started to write everything out without giving too much attention for small errors, and I am able to write a lot faster. Of course, my first draft is not as it used to be, but I can go back correct my errors at any time. In addition, my big problem was that I would always start from the beginning and work my way down. However, if I stalled on the introduction which I always tried to make it attractive, I would stop the whole and leave the work for later.…

What writing means to me and why I prefer to shy away from it, until now. Being an Adult Learner, having been out of school for more than 30 years my weaknesses outweigh my strengths. My greatest weakness in writing, I would have to say is my spelling and use of grammar. I have recently been diagnosed with a slight learning disability which explains my problems with spelling and grammar. Having 4 children who I am very close too helps alleviate a huge portion of my inhibitions about writing, that combined with the newer technologies of programs like MS Word and other programs like it that have spell and grammar check help me in my daily writing needs.…

Cursive writing, such a wonderful art; exercises the mind, improves the speed of writing ten-fold. Not to mention the best part, you dont even have to take your pen of the paper. I understand it a dying practice, but when there is no other easy way of doing things cursive will no longer be an option if it keeps getting put to the side right along with latin. as stated in the article "Cursive Is a Powerful Brain Tool", "Medical scans show that writing in cursive helps with fine motor skill development and stimulates both left and right parts of the brain." which to me is just another type of exercise altogether.…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

Should cursive writing be taught in schools or not? In my opinion I believe that cursive writing should absolutely be taught in schools. The first reason is because like the article says writing by hand helps process the material better , also summarize ideas rather than simply recording everything. Second reason is because not only is it a good thing but study shows that even given a week to study those who took notes on their laptops performed worse than those who wqrote notes by hand.…

During a time before typing, cursive handwriting was the most prompt means of communication--the strokes and hand movements involved in cursive glide quicker than print handwriting. Since then, cursive handwriting has been commonly regarded, by handwriting teachers at conferences and elsewhere, to be more and more of an antiquated craft. But does this mean cursive doesn't have a place in our busy world of hyper-communication? Not necessarily.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
