The Importance Of Friendships By Sherman Alexie

Is it truly better to lose a friend for the better? Arnold sure has within this book, The author Sherman Alexie, shows that the friendships throughout the book are important and able to help Arnold deal with what’s going on, not only that but how did his two new friends help Arnold with his poverty? In this novel it could be pointing towards that sometimes losing a friend could be better for you than not losing a friend.
Of course friends can help overcome some things in life, that’s exactly what happens to Arnold. For one, on page 126, Alexie wrote “He opened his wallet and handed me forty bucks” That’s showing that Arnold’s friends were able to help him out with some cash when he needed it. Also on page 129, Alexie had written “Roger, being

It’s not really said that he has it but there are puzzle pieces in the book directing towards it, just as in this quote “After Oscar died, I was so depressed that I thought about crawling into a hole and disappearing forever.” (15) They probably couldn’t help Arnold with his poverty, due to it being such a massive problem in his life. Even though none of them could change Arnold’s poverty, they could make him feel less bad about it sometimes, just as in this quote “I figured she was going to march right on out of my life then. But she didn’t” (127) This quote and this other quote “She was being my friend. Being a really good friend in fact.” (127) These two quotes are able to explain how Penelope is being a good friend towards Arnold, not leaving him after he told her he was poor. Similarly the same goes for Roger, “It will be good to have you out there...I couldn’t believe he was so nice. He was, well. He was POLITE.” This quote is showing, even that Roger had been rude to Arnold before with a racist insult, he could be nice to Arnold and be his friend. Penelope and Roger have been there to help Arnold rather than Rowdy, which used to be his best friend before they got into a argument and broke their friendship …show more content…
For Arnold it may have been for the better, back when he was friends with Rowdy, Arnold seemed to have been going down a bad path back when he was at his old before he transfered over to Rearden. Back at his old school he got into some trouble by throwing a book at a teacher’s head and he got suspended. But maybe it was for the better, when Arnold first told Rowdy he was leaving, Rowdy replied with “You always thought you were better than me, He yelled… No, no I don’t think I’m better than anybody. I think I’m worse than everybody else” (52) This may have hinted that Rowdy was making Arnold feel worse or insecure about himself, thinking that he was worse than anybody around. Rowdy also punched Arnold on the same page in the passage “Bang! Rowdy punched me. Bang! I hit the ground. Bang! My nose bled like a firework.” This shows that Rowdy is very aggressive if something that he doesn’t like want comes up. Those quotes may help show that sometimes removing something or someone negative may be better than not removing

Whenever Arnold was being bullied and being made fun of, Rowdy would go back and do the same thing back to the kids that bully Arnold and make fun of him. He would protect him like a little brother from danger and anyone else that tries to harm Arnold. Just like in the book when Arnold was being bullied by the Andruss brother, Rowdy was so mad that he says to Arnold, “I’m going to kill those bastard, said Rowdy” (p.23). Rowdy was so mad that he was willing to do such harm to the Andruss brother just to protect Arnold from them again. Another example that shows how Rowdy would protect Arnold from harm was during the Spokane Tribe Powwow celebration and Arnold was to scare to go because he fear that he might end up getting beat up.…

The novel ends with a conversation between himself and Rowdy wherein Rowdy support Arnold being a nomad and understands the dualism that comes from being from different places. With Rowdy’s reassurance and support, Arnold begins to feel more comfortable with himself and realizes it is okay to have a diverse background and be from different places at the same time. He begins listing off the tribes he belongs to, including Spokane Indians, bookworms, American immigrants, cartoonists, and small-town kids, among others. It becomes abundantly clear that Alexie understands identifying yourself as accepting yourself, as we see Arnold go from identifying himself as a weird kid who compares his brain to a greasy French fry, to a person of many tribes with ease and comfort. He understands what makes him, him, and there…

The first theme of death is portrayed differently within each book.. For instance, in 1984, the theme of death is “mentally”, whereas in The Fault In Our Stars and Catalyst the death is real.…

This quote, in reference to people like the Buchanans, displays the distaste Nick has for such people. Nick can see that both Tom and Daisy are careless, harmful people who do not care much about who or what may get in their way, and simply barrell ahead. Nick however, is not completely enamoured with Gatsby, and because of his somewhat removed position he can honestly assess people. An excellent example of this is that Nick admits in the beginning of the book that even though he found Gatsby to be a wonderful person who he couldn’t help but like; he initially believed Gatsby “Represented…
