Reading and writing is the most important set of skills a person can learn. Much of our communication comes from reading and writing in today’s standards. There are two main variations of illiteracy one is being totally illiterate which means one cannot read or write at all, while the other is being partially illiterate which means one can read or write but do so very poorly.
There are many factors on why a population surrounding a certain area becomes illiterate. For example, an immigrant who cannot speak the native language or a family that cannot afford basic education. The lack of a proper education budget from a reduced government can be a main factor. John Wood the author of Creating Room to Read emphasizes to us to show how great the problem of illiteracy is as he states, “Education, after all, is the one issue that affects every other one” (Wood 11). Poor learning quality can hold back one’s ability to learn. The United Nations Educational, scientific and cultural organization stated in their summary Teaching and Learning “An education system is as good as its teachers” (UNESCO 3). The United Nations Educational, scientific and cultural organization also provided research with adult illiteracy by stating that adult literacy has grown to 72% of the global population. A big factor in adult illiteracy is not being taught at a young age, most education services provide education for people at a young age.
