The amount of land that deer inhabit is diminishing and with that populations are growing. White tailed deer populations have grown from 260,000 to 350,000 in the 1970’s to over 1 million in 2009. (Yarrow 1) Animal space is key for a population to thrive. This is why hunting is a crucial thing to stabilizing a population. When a deer is harvested, it takes that gene out of the gene pool for that area. Hunting basically keeps a wildlife area at a sustainable number of individuals from one generation to the next. This helps with overgrazing and habitat destruction. (Gibbons 1) The definition of stabilizing is to maintain at a given or fluctuating level. (dictionary.com) When a population is stabilized, it is working in perfect harmony with the environment and that is what we are aiming for. So, hunting is the best way to stabilize a population. It is the best to have a ration of two females to one male. It does not always happen, but it is the best way to try and make that happen. Another reason to try and keep populations at a sustained level is the amount of food for the animals. Hunting food plots do give food to animals, but if the populations are too big, the animals will begin to die of starvation. This is not what we want. Hunting for sport is a way to bond with members of your family and make friends for a lifetime. It is a time to spend quality time with people you may not ever get to see. I can recall many times when hunting for sport where I was able to hunt with my dad or grandfather. Those are some of the best memories of my life. They teach you so much. It is also amazing how much hunting can teach about being a good and ethical person. We always would just take what we needed from nature and nothing more. Biologist will scout land along with researching the amount of breeding done and how many offspring were produced. This helps with making limits for hunting. This also helps with keeping the populations healthy so that we do not take to many animals away. By just harvesting what you need, it allows for a great time in the field and for many memories to be made. It also allows for us to view nature as something
