Is Hamlet Truly Insane?

The titular character in “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare is arguably one of the greatest fictional characters ever created. He is clever, brooding, witty, and his emotional turmoil is fascinating to observe. What also makes Hamlet interesting is that the audience rarely ever knows what he is going to do. He is a bit of a mystery and he leaves the audience with questions about what he is doing and why. One of the biggest questions that people have about Hamlet is if he is truly insane. Some believe that Hamlet is only feigning his insanity. Others believe that he is sane for a portion of the play. The point at which he switches to madness though, is debated. By looking closely through the play though, it can be proven that Hamlet feigns madness …show more content…
Luckily, there is an absolutely insane character in “Hamlet”, Ophelia. Ophelia is unaware of what is happening around her and can’t hold a simple conversation. Even when faced with death, Ophelia allows herself to sink into the water and drown. If this is what a crazy person acts like, then Hamlet doesn’t match the description at all. He is completely aware of his surroundings and situation. Not only does he hold conversations, but takes part in complicated wordplay and makes witty comments. The other characters in the play seem to actually treat Ophelia and Hamlet differently as though they sense that Hamlet isn’t truly mad. After Gertrude and Claudius realize that Ophelia is seen they stop addressing her and speak as though she can’t understand what they are saying. This is very unlike Hamlet to whom they try to reason and argue with for the entirety of the play as though he is just being unreasonable instead of …show more content…
Within the play Hamlet, Ophelia, Laertes, Polonius, Gertrude, Guildenstern, Rosencrantz, and Claudius all die. All but Claudius’ could have been avoided if Hamlet had just swiftly killed the King as he originally said he would. Polonius’ death is a result of the pressure Hamlet is under to kill the King and the fact that Claudius could have been behind the tapestry instead. Ophelia goes insane and drowns as a result of Polonius’ murder. Laertes poisons Hamlet to avenge his father’s death and then is cut with his own poisoned sword. The poisoned sword had been Claudius’ idea. Gertrude drinks the poison Claudius attempted to have Hamlet drink. Guildenstern and Rosencrantz are killed in England after Hamlet finds a letter revealing to him that he was being sent to England to be executed and changes the letter to lead to Guildenstern and Rosencrantz’s deaths instead of his own. Hamlet also eventually kills Claudius, but not without the casualties of most of Hamlet’s friends and family. Although, Hamlet’s plan of feigning insanity works and Claudius is eventually killed, it probably wasn’t the best

Is Hamlet truly insane? There is much evidence in the play that Hamlet deliberately put on fake fits of madness in order to confuse and bewilder the king and his attendants. However, it is important to point out that the reason why Hamlet acted this way is because of the tragic incident of his father's death. This becomes evident right away when Hamlet contemplates suicide in the first soliloquy of the play. Hamlet gets the idea of faking insanity from Horatio's warning when he meets his father's spirit.…

After careful consideration and much thought I have come to the idea that Hamlet was not crazy, but more fueled by revenge than anything. At first glance it’s easy to assume that hamlet acts the way he does because he is mentally unstable and his grief has taken a toll, but ultimately it was his determination to get even with Claudius for killing his father. Nevertheless, Hamlets procrastination leads to his unfortunate demise. In the end both Claudius and Hamlet received the ultimate consequence for their sins. When Hamlet learns that that his mother has married his uncle he decides that he needs to share his feelings for her.…

On occasions when Hamlet is in contact with either Horatio, Bernardo, Francisco, the players and the gravediggers Hamlet is calm and could be considered a completely normal person. Only a person that was truly sane and had a definite purpose behind a feigned madness could pull off such an elaborate scheme. For the audience to better understand insanity. Shakespeare gives an example of a character in which undergoes an extreme case of insanity. The question of whether Hamlet was truly mad or not has sparked many conflicting answers about The Tragedy of Hamlet. However, there is more powerful evidence pointing to the fact that Hamlet is truly mad. As Shakespeare develops his characters, Hamlet seems to become crazier as the play progresses. Hamlet’s true madness is revealed in a number of different ways. A few examples of how Hamlet goes mad are shown when Hamlet ignores Horatio’s warning not to speak to the ghost, when Hamlet shows no remorse for taking a human life, and in the appearance of a ghost that only Hamlet can see.…

Isn't it possible that Hamlet is both really insane and pretending to be insane? He doesn’t think he is crazy, but his actions suggest otherwise. His behavior throughout the play is erratic; one would expect such actions from a sociopath. For example, after he kills Polonius, he will not reveal the location of the body (Shakespeare 171). Since this act is not aimed at some good, that is strong evidence for his madness.…

There are countless examples throughout the play that suggest that Hamlet was obfuscating madness. Hamlet says to Horatio following his conversation with the ghost of the late King Hamlet that he “…perchance hereafter shall think meet / To put an antic disposition on” which contributes to the argument that Hamlet had not actually descended into madness. Arguably, Hamlet was never truly mad, but instead pretended he was mad in order to free himself from the confines…

However, given the evidence, one can conclude that Hamlet is in fact faking insanity for the reason of cleverly investigating his father 's murder. The facts supporting this argument include, why Hamlet would feign madness, admitting to other people of his sanity, and only acting insane around certain characters. Without the act, much of his investigation would have drawn unwanted attention, ridding him of several opportunities to gather…

Throughout the play Hamlet, by Shakespeare, the character hamlet appears insane as he speaks in incomprehensible, baffling language. Hamlet 's ambiguous madness appears controlled at times, and at others he seems irreparably erratic. Despite the ambiguity of Hamlet 's lunacy, it is clear he uses his absurdity to gain an advantage over the king. Hamlet feigns madness in order to attain his objective of misleading Claudius and his attendants to believe he is mad to protect himself, and always remains in complete control of his psyche despite other character 's doubts.…
