“To be or not to be” is the most famous sentence from the play Hamlet, which is written by William Shakespeare. It is an expression from the desperate prince Hamlet. From Hamlet’s view, he questions about two things. Should he keep revenging for the Old Hamlet; should he keep living or commit suicide? From an outsider’s perspective, this is a question that Hamlet brought up to demonstrate he is struggling from keeping or losing his sanity. There are two answers for the question of whether hamlet is sane or insane when it is considered in two perspectives.
Apparently Hamlet does not consider himself insane, but his actions seem to be considered insane to other people, like Polonius, the Queen and the King. If a person is living completely by himself/herself, there is no criteria which can be used to judge whether the person is sane or insane. Also, linking back to the definition of “sanity” and “insanity”, they have different meanings to different person. If a person is living by him/herself, there would be no other people judging whether him/her is insane. Therefore, he/she needs to judge him/herself whether he/she is thinking rationally or irrationally. When people are insane, they are more likely behave irrationally, which makes it more possible to take another person’s life. However, killing a person is not the same as committing a murder.
