Hamlet went through a very dramatic transition in his life, his Dad was killed by his uncle, then his uncle married Hamlet's mom. Though it is very possible Hamlet is suffering some kind of mental disorder, I believe that it was all an act and he is perfectly sane. Hamlet tells Horatio that he is going to ‘feign madness’ and if Horatio notices any strange behavior from Hamlet, it is because he is putting on an act.[Act i, Scene v, lines 166-180]. Hamlet only acts crazy when he is in the presence of certain characters, but with others he acts sane. Also, Hamlet does not act like Ophelia in her true madness. Lastly Hamlet admits that he may be crazy and ‘crazy’ people don't do that. Many times in this book Hamlet talks to Horatio being completely sane and in control of all his thought and actions. At one point Hamlet's mother is worried about him so he has to tell her that he is not mad, ‘but mad in craft.’[Act iii, scene iv, lines 188-199] When he talks to Claudius and certain other characters he feigns insanity. They don't believe he is insane, infact Polonius confesses that Hamlet’s actions and words have a ‘method’ to them; there appears to be a reason behind them, they are logical in nature [Act ii, scene ii, lines 306-307]. After Hamlet killed Polonius while he was talking to his mom in her bedroom, Ophelia became truly insane. She was flabbergasted when she found out that Hamlet was the one that killed her dad. Ophelia started rambling all the time and never making sense to anyone she talked to, unlike hamlet who only lapsed into prose while he talked to someone that would affect his chance on getting revenge on Claudius. Ophelia goes completely mad and drowns herself because she can't take the fact that Hamlet, her potential lover, killed her
