Love and tragedy come to mind when the topic of Shakespeare’s novels are mentioned. The last thing on your mind when reading Hamlet by William Shakespeare is insanity. In the play of Hamlet, the death of Hamlet’s father is the tragedy. This makes readers question, is Hamlet really crazy? Hamlet is not crazy; he is simply putting on act to cover up his plan for revenge. Hamlet is not crazy he just wants everyone else thinking he is. After talking to the ghost, he sets up the play to find out whether or not his uncle Claudius is the murderer of his father. He also decides not to kill Claudius when he sees him on his knees praying. In the play, Hamlet himself tells Horatio that he’s going to start acting crazy and must not tell anyone what happened to him that night. He quotes “as I perchance here after shall think meet to put on an antic disposition on” (Act 1. Sc.5). By quoting this, this is huge proof that Hamlet is only acting crazy. The next day, Hamlet had the actors perform The Murder of Gonzago with an extra speech composed of twelve to sixteen lines that he’d come up with. Before the play starts, Hamlet says to Horatio “There is a play tonight before the king/which told thee of my father’s death/for I mine eyes will rivet to his face, and after we will both our judgments join in censure of his seeming” (Act 3.sc.2).
