Gun control has been a very controversial topic in the United States in recent history. Gun control can be looked at as a good thing necessary for increased safety. Others can see it as the exact opposite. With respect to both arguments, Gun control isn’t needed because rather than decreasing safety levels, guns increase the safety of people around them. Owning firearms is a constitutional right held by every deserving citizen in the United States. Firearms also positively impact society because if they are used correctly by school staff, they can protect the lives of children from attackers.

One location concealed firearms could be useful is on school grounds. Some schools are too far off from civilization to get fast emergency responses, “Surrounded by miles of empty countryside, the small community of Hanover is something of an island on the high, rolling plains southeast of Colorado Springs.When trouble strikes, the close-knit hamlet of ranchers and farmers can wait up to half an hour or more for sheriff's deputies to arrive” (The Heart of the Gun Crisis). Schools like Hanover that are in the same position, far from civilization, need staff members on campus to carry concealed weapons for faster response to things such as school shootings and protect the safety of children. Guns on campus would also overall increase safety levels because without them, schools just lock the door and hope for the best, wishing that nothing tragic will occur. In a situation where a shooter enters a school that also has an armed staff member, the shooter would be stopped much faster than without the armed staff and more lives would be saved (The Heart of the Gun Crisis). Some believe that gun control is necessary in the US because 68% of the homicides that occur are because of guns (Mackay). Although 68% of homicides are because of guns, 32% of homicides occur because of other things. Are there talks of possible control of things like kitchen knives or things of that sort? No, of course not because there are too many of them out in the world already. The same goes for firearms. There is such a mass amount of guns in the United States, it would be nearly impossible for the government to take guns away or put restrictions on guns that so many people already have. Because of the sheer amount of firearms, “...there is no way to extinguish this supply of guns. It would be constitutionally suspect and politically impossible to confiscate hundreds of millions of weapons” (Gun Control Isn’t the Answer). This furthermore explains that there are far too many guns in the United States for the government to take them away. According to the Washington Post there were 357 million guns and only 317 million people in the United States in 2013 (Ingraham). The fact that there are more guns than people in the US only explains just how impossible it would be to put restrictions on guns already in circulation. It would be impossible to take guns away from the United States people.
