The author says, “Experiments demonstrate that readers of ideograms, such as chinese, develop mental circuitry for reading that is very different from the circuitry found in those of us whose written language employs an alphabet” (Carr). I think that this makes sense because readers of ideograms interpret text completely different. Reading in ideograms is a whole other type of interpretation in the brain. Friedrich Nietzsche was a writer whose vision was failing and focusing on the page became exhausting, and commonly brought on crushing headaches. In the late 1800’s, he bought a typewriter, mastered touch-typing, and was soon enough able to type with his eyes closed. This newfound writing tool enabled him to write again. The typewriter actually had an affect on his style of writing. His already tight prose had become even tighter. Nietzsche later commented, “our equipment takes part in the forming of our thoughts” (Carr). Many times when I begin to writing I have to force myself to just start typing, and my thoughts flow out onto the
