Since the 1982 approval by the FDA for GMOs, there was a huge increase. “By 2011 there were also three times as many herbicide-resistant weeds found in farmer's fields as there were in 2001,” according to gmo-crops-mean-more-herbicide-not-less. But what exactly are GMOs? GMO stands for genetically modified organism. Farmers or scientists take a crop, and take a strand of DNA from another organism and extracts it into the crop. For example, strands of DNA are taken from a bacteria known as Bacillus thuringiensis and extracted into various crops to make them immune to insects, so they have their own natural pesticide. Many foods contain BT because it is easier for farmers to grow their crops without having insects eat it. Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, have caused quite a debate since they were introduced in the early 70’s. In general, GMOs referred to any organism whose genetic makeup was a result of experimental crossbreeding (gmo). Scientists were then able to narrow the definition down once recombinant DNA techniques were discovered and introduced. We now refer to GMOs as simply any organism that is genetically modified by recombinant DNA technology (great gmo debate). We originally started to create GMOs in order to answer questions in biology and medicine.…

Genetically modified foods are not able to reproduce for example, once a GMO seed is planted it will not produce anymore seeds for farmers to reproduce more fruits. farmers are forced to go buy more GMO seeds, so economically farmers are loosing money faster then there making it.…

“Recent studies have found that farmers growing genetically engineered crops are using just as many toxic pesticides and herbicides as conventional farmers and in some cases using more”(Miller). In addition, scientists predict that there will be a growth in “ BT- resistant pests will eliminate the effectiveness of a natural pesticide that organic farmers use”(Miller). Scientists have tested GMOs on animals to show the effects of consuming Genetically modified crops. One example is “when female rats were fed GMOs before, and during their pregnancy more than 50% of their offspring died within 3 weeks of birth” (Smith). Jennifer Suwayda, in her debate article about pros and cons of genetically modified crops mentioned: The more a pesticide—or in this case a GM crop that produces its own toxins—is used, the more likely insects are to develop a resistance. Insect that become resistant to these toxins are harder to kill. While companies like Monsanto have advised farmers to rotate their crops every year to try and keep resistance at bay, many farmers do not follow these guidelines. As a result, certain GM crops are starting to lose their effectiveness, and resistant super bugs are emerging. This proves that, the use of products to support GMOs is I one way or another killing the planet, when food should be safe for all living…
