Is germ gene line therapy a valid option for parents?
In this report I am analysing if germ gene line therapy being a valid option for parents. The germ gene line therapy is a process of transferring the DNA into the reproductive cells in the body such as an egg or a sperm cell. DNA is deoxyribonucleic acid which is double helix code which consists of nitrogenous bases such as adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine. These nitrogenous bases account for the genome code of A,T,G, and C. The nitrogenous base provides a specific sequence unique to each individual inherited from parents’ genetics. This DNA transferring involves in vitro fertilisation (IVF) for the egg and sperm to meet outside the mother’s body.

The idea of genes as drugs for human therapy was born in the United States in 1970s. The first application of gene therapy was used for treating patients with inherited monogenic disorders with recessive inheritance such as cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophies, lysosomal storage disorders, hemophilia, and many other conditions related with genetics (Giacca p.1). Gene therapy is done in two ways, one way is by isolating the patien’s cell followed by transferring genes in the lab called ex vivo gene therapy, or by direct delivery of therapeutic gene into the patients called in vivo gene therapy (Giacca …show more content…
The nucleic acids produced from the procedure of gene line therapy can be toxic to the chemical and biological properties. Forexample naked nucleic acids can interfere with coagulation or interference with cell function leading to death. The delivery system used for the gene transfer can also damage the systematic and cellular levels such as herpes virus from in vivo gene therapy. THE GENE DELIVERY PROCEDURES ARE ALSO TOXIS .(Gaccia p. 283, 284). However, there is a major moral obligation to treat any patient with the best available treatment, and everyone agrees with this moral obligation. The correction of the genetic defect occurs in the germ cells, and the produced offspring could be affected by the disorder and the additional gene therapy would be required to correct the therapy. There is also possibility to modify height, streghth, intelligence or memory which could greatly interfere with the normal variability on the basis of evolution.
