Have you ever wondered if the cost of a college education is worth the cost? This is what parents deliberate when their high school senior is applying for college. Students perceive the beauty of the school; parents view the bills. Each year, incoming college freshman is beginning their new adventure of attending college. The biggest concern with starting school is how students will pay for this expensive education. Some people believe that the cost of a college education is not worth it. Although the cost of education has skyrocketed, it is still worth it. College is more than just writing a hefty check to a school to educate students. It is what students make it. College students gain more than an education, they build character. In Is College Really Worth It?, Yolanda Melville says, “College is about academics, but good grades do not make a well-rounded student. College is also about personal growth and development. Use this time to better yourself” (Melville). Students receive a quality education from their professors, but they also acquire valuable experiences. They learn about their self. They are away from their parents and free to make decisions on their own. This can be a positive experience for students because they have character development. They learn more about their interests. They learn to be independent. College students are also exposed to diversity and different people. In college, there are multiple clubs and organizations to join. Students join clubs and organizations to become enriched with fresh information, gain new friends, and become involved around campus. In college, students can gain essential connects with important people. “Anyone who met their spouse or best friend at college will have a hard time saying that the experience wasn’t worth it…” (Alder). Students do not have to befriend a person just because they are around them eight hours for five consecutive days. That is how students made friends in grade school. In college, students can befriend whoever they want. “…many people get their first post-college jobs through connections they make in classes” (Alder). Students can connect with their classmates. Their past and present classmates can graduate and become CEOs or obtain other important jobs. This can be beneficial for their friends. It will help them obtain a job under their friend and eventually, work their way up. However, befriending others will not always lead to CEO status. They can put in a recommendation for a retail job or part-time job where they worked in the past or where they are now. It can jump-start them after graduating. It may not be that CEO status, but it is a respectable start. In addition, getting to know professors are beneficial. They are there to assist students, not just fail them and assign difficult work every week. Students can utilize professors for their advantage. For example, students can ask for help with assignments. If someone does not understand something, they should ask the professor.
