Women have accomplished so much in American history. Women went from not having the right to vote to owning big corporate companies, running government and earning doctorate degrees. The question is, is feminism still relevant for modern women? Women have achieved a lot throughout the years so is there really a need for feminism? First, what is the definition of feminism? “If many millions of women were getting carjacked or kidnapped, we’d call it a public crisis” (Maxwell). Furthermore according to the Sexual Assault Responses Services, only 39 percent of rape and sexual assaults were reported to law enforcements. So many sex crimes go unreported due to sexism in modern society and in law enforcement. Women are questioned about what they were wearing and if they were drinking during their assault. Women are victim shamed and blamed for their assaults by law enforcements, peers, relatives and by our own society instead of blaming the rapist, the real criminal, the one who should shamed, the one who should face the consequences. According to the RAINN, 97 percent of rapists never spend a single day in jail for their crimes (Maxwell). Women are told that they should take responsibility for their actions, women are told that they should not drink in public places, women are blamed for their rape because of choice of clothing and told women should not want attention, they should not dress in an improper way. Women are told they asked for it and other negatives comments. Victim shaming and unreported sex crimes all contribute to rape culture. What rape culture is? “Rape Culture is an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture” (Freeman). People make excuses for the offender’s actions and blame it on the woman. “Rape Culture is when, in 31 states, rapists can legally sue for child custody if the rape results in pregnancy” (Maxwell). Feminism is needed in modern society because women are blamed for their attack, women are scared to report their attacks because they will not be taken seriously.
