Loss Of Faith In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

Is everyone naturally secretive? Or are we too afraid of the truth? The story “Young Goodman Brown” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is about a young man who is currently confused about his life. It begins with him leaving his wife Faith to have a meeting in the forest with the devil. Goodman brown is afraid to leave his wife, although he wants to continue his meeting in the forest. Throughout the story, we can see that Brown tries to be a good puritan and to have faith. He constantly battles with himself on what he is doing and if it is just. Through all these occurrences, he feels as if everything he is experiencing is true, but it may not be. On his journey through the forest, Brown sees people he knows and does not understand what they are doing in the forest. Goodman Brown is constantly battling with himself because he wants to believe everything he experienced was true. Continuing through the forest he experiences and sees people he knows being crazy. At the time, the story is written the Christian belief is great among the people, they have nothing else to follow. Hawthorne uses symbolism to hide the real message of the story, in which Brown is slowly losing his faith in his beliefs. Goodman Brown says “My Faith is gone!” “There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name.” He completely lost his faith, which again is used as symbolically. At this point he realizes that he doesn’t believe anything. After so many excuses and so many thing to avoid his actual beliefs. He has enough and his faith is gone. He is pretty sure that everything that he once was living was a lie.
