With this ideology we must realize that marriage is a sacrament and it is binding. According to the bible, Matthew 19:6 states, “So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate”. The majority of marriages are done with the witness of some kind of religious authority, who ultimately resemble Christ and his teachings. Going against the sacrament, disregarding vows and committing to a divorce seems almost like a slap in the face to God. We fail to realize the high importance of what we are binding too. Cloutier touches on the aspect of how “the social stigma associated with divorce has largely disappeared”, this day in age individualism and independence have overpowered our thought processes. We believe in authenticity, what will make us happy or how we can grasp our opportunities to the best of our abilities. What about sharing a bond with another person? Do we wait until it’s convenient for us? Or in this case if we are slightly unhappy or uncomfortable should we find what satisfies our temporary need? Isn’t that what dating should be for. Once a couple has decided to commit to one another “finding” temporary “happiness” is selfish. Working on making a bond strong should be the goal for a marriage not divorce. In accordance to this, John Paul II explained that “the Spirit which the Lord pours fourth gives a new heart, and …show more content…
Cloutier suggested a meaning for vowed love,” it is a clear difference between love in dating and love in marriage”. Vows highlight that love is unconditional and promised/permanent. It is a promise to give oneself to the other person, placing a persons’ life in the hands of another. This promise must be a mutual consensus, this is why there is a heavy weigh on vows. Marriage promises are mutual self-giving through the mind, body and soul. Making these promises to “just anyone” is unjustifiable, marriage is about irreplaceability. Lackadaisical commitments are a way to ruin a bond between two people, compared to if Christ got on the cross then all of a sudden jumped down and said “never mind, you all can figure this out on your own”. These bonds people have with one another are very serious and I do agree with Cloutier when he ask “why so many people are being allowed to marry in the first place if the Church believes they lack the necessary knowledge and emotional maturity”. Divorce in this case is necessary because both individuals need to reflect on their actions and why they “claim” to want to practice this same love Christ exemplifies for all of his children. However, with this type of divorce both individuals should be learning along with the church how to love and why they
