AH, WHAT A MESS. DIVERSITY, that is. Before I launch into a preview of all the intertwined issues that make diversity such a misdirected drama, I’ll start with a simple question: Is diversity a good idea done wrong, or a bad idea done just right? As I will make clear throughout this book, there is nothing inherently wrong with the idea of diversity, and in fact as an idea it evokes tremendous promise. The problem therefore must lie in the execution and in the application, and that indeed is pretty much the central message of this whole book. In spite of decades of diversity policy and practice, America is in many ways more divided than ever when it comes to issues of identity. Critics from the political left argue that we simply need more diversity to overcome the division, while critics from the political right argue that diversity has devolved into an unworkable set of unfair entitlements that are themselves the cause of the division. Understanding the Misunderstanding, the first part of the four-part series Ourselves Among Others: The Extravagant Failure of Diversity in America and An Epic Plan to Make It Work, explains the sources and causes of the social divide in America, and also shows how neither the political left nor the political right have understood the problem or…

How can belonging and participating within a diverse community aid in the development of your academic, social and career goals? I usually enjoy starting my papers of with my name Taylor Andrews, what I’m entering for, the battle royal for everything, and my level a EKU JR, and arrogantly but rightly deserves it. Then I would give a generic merriam-webster dictionary for diversity; the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc, and then give my view. You may not agree but still feel as if EKU has a large way to go compared to Rutgers University in NJ with a diversity. Diversity plus Eastern Kentucky University is supposed to equal melting pot, but I have not seen this diverse world clearly.…

My philosophy on diversity is that we are all different and thatś not a bad thing because it shows us that there are different types of people in this world and not everyone is like you. Independence is a very important thing because it gives children the ability to show that they can do things on their own and they don need help. With independence it also shows the muchurity of the child and that they are not helpless but they are independent. Overall goals in my work place is that the children will emotionally and physically be ready for kindergarden. But, our goals are also to make sure the children learn and have jobs such as snack helper, door holder or even bathroom monitor to show their indepentence but also their self- concept because…

I chose an article from The National Law Review by Daniel J. Green entitle Promoting Diversity Without Reverse Discrimination. I thought this article was interesting because it addressed the potentially negative impact of diversity programs. The issue of diversity has been covered in several of my business classes. I agree that diversity in the workplace is beneficial and should be actively addressed by leadership. While we have been given many basic outlines for implementing diversity programs and the potential benefits to such programs, as well as, the potentially negative consequences of ignoring this issue, no text has effectively outlined the dangers of an overly aggressive diversity program.…

Diversity is defined as the state of being diverse or having variety. In both articles “How Diversity Makes Us Smarter” and “Diversity doesn’t Stick without Inclusion” the topic is about how diversity affects the work place. Both articles state that having diversity in the workplace has a positive effect. Although, in “Diversity doesn’t Stick without Inclusion” the article doesn’t just focus on diversity but also on inclusion. This article is much more focused on the idea that both inclusion and diversity need to be present in the workplace for there to be a successful outcome.…

While some may look at diversity as a negative factor, it is important to analyze the different effects of diversity on communities. Diversity is beneficial to a community until it reaches a breaking point. That breaking point is determined by the community and their willingness to accept one another’s values. Communities that have a higher acceptance level and tolerate more diversity will reach a breaking point later than communities that refuse to be accepting of diversity. This is why it’s important to find a balance when it comes to diversity in the community.…

In today's societal climate there is a tendency to limit the discussion of diversity to issues of race, ethnicity or gender . While these differences are important, diversity is more than affirmative action, equality of employment opportunity, multiculturalism and plurality revisited. Human diversity should always include the human differences, individual distinctiveness and uniqueness of all persons. These categories of human diversity - which include differences in history, experience, knowledge, imagination, personality, intelligence, talent, ability, perspective, insight, gender, class, community, society and culture, - should be tapped to further the organization's…
