Argument and Evidence
There is much agreement that creativity is beneficial for the healthy development of children. However, what challenges are present when the child has an atypical learning style or developmental delay? Children with Autism Spectrum Diagnosis characteristically have certain sensory sensitivities to touch/texture, light, sound, or smell. These sensitivities can present an obstacle when gaining an understanding of the world through hands-on art education. Similarly, children with another atypical learning need, Attention Hyperactivity Disorder, characteristically do not have the prolonged concentration or patience for sustained traditional academic learning.
In a 2013 study published by Journal of Developmental Disabilities, Ahmed Al Hariri provides evidence that children aged 4-6 years with ADHD and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) can show “significant improvement” in thinking and behavioral skills with as little as 20-30 minutes a day of hands-on art studio activities such as drawing or sculpting with clay (Hariri, 2013, p. 84). He concluded this by comparing five thinking skills and five behavioral skills before and after each session of structured art activities or artistic free-play. His methods for comparison consisted of the use of “observation cards” and feedback from thirteen experts across five fields: art education, psychology, preschool education, special education, and curriculum and teaching instruction (Hariri, 2013, p. 83).…
