Social Media updates everyone the new way to look, act, and feel. This makes us all feel the need to conform and replicate the new “trend”. We do this to feel accepted into today's critical society. Some may argue and say that conformity is necessary because without conformity people would not be able to collaborate with one another. Though I confess that some amount of conformity is important, I still insist that it is more important to embrace the characteristics that make each person unique and to challenge the beliefs and theories of society for it to grow and improve the future generations. In the scene of the movie “Dead Poet Society” Mr Keating has three of his students do an activity where they simply walk in circles in the school courtyard. The three students began to walk at the same pace. The rest of the class then began to clap to the rhythm of the steps of the three students walking. People copy each other to see if they are doing something correctly, hence why all three of the students walked at the same pace. If an individual does not resist the temptation to conform, they will lose their individuality that makes them different. Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Pedestrian” provides a memorable picture of what a world without any non-conformists might look like. The city the author describes, “The car moved down the empty river- bed streets and off away, leaving the empty streets with the empty pavements, and no sound and no motion all the rest of the chill November night” (Bradbury 5). This passage portrays the city as empty, no soul, lifeless. This supports the idea that when all individuals conform to the same social expectations, the world loses the uniqueness of each person which makes the world seem dark and empty.
