No matter what country you are in, the leaders and representatives of our government determine how the education system is formatted along with many other issues that affect us. In Patrick Allitt 's article “Should Undergraduate Specialize” he shares his experience from two different education systems, the British meritocratic system and the American decentralized system. From Mr. Allit’s experience, the British meritocratic system for education allows the individual to focus and be more engaged in one subject (512). This way of teaching allows the student to be get a deeper understanding on the subject by not having them attended classes that won 't benefit them. The American decentralized system on the other hand exposes students to many different subjects throughout their college career (Allitt 512). Mr. Allitt states, “the great virtue of the American system is it 's breadth” (512). By this, Mr. Allitt means that students are exposed to a much wider array of studies (512). This allows students that haven 't chosen their career entering into college to make a decision later. This is approach fell short for Mr. Allitt when his freshmen students turned in their final papers for his history class. He wrote, “the great American drawbacks revealed themselves: the students ' writing was awful, and their knowledge utterly superficial. Their breadth was the breadth of rivers an inch deep” (512). For my career, web development, I know plenty of people that have skipped college all together and have done countless hours of coding to teach themselves. Many of them have great jobs and I defiantly see the benefits to working on your own time. But in Mr. Delbanco 's article, he sums it up very well with “The best reason to care about college-who goes, and what happens to them when they get there-is not what it does for society in economics terms but what it can do for individuals, in both calculable and incalculable ways” (507). Just like Mr. Delbanco I see college as an open door that can lead to where ever you want to go and the teachers, staff, and other students are there helping you to achieve just
