The opinion society has held of college has transformed over the years. In the early 20th century, it was not seen as a necessity to get a job or to prove people as productive members of society. Now, most people have either been pressured to go, wanted to go on their own freewill, or romanticized the idea of going to college. College is a hot topic of conversation nowadays, and tons of young adults are stressing over it. As a whole, society has created a growth in the significance of going to college; it is viewed as a necessity. This significance, or value of going to college is increased when the degree chosen comes from a place of passion, rather than chosen for its monetary gain.
Evidently, people that earn more money are not necessarily happier than those that earn less. This is because at a higher salary, happiness levels tap out and are not as wonderful as the happiness achieved by lower salaried counterparts. Even if someone has all the money in the world, it cannot protect them from becoming a bad person, or a person that everyone would rather leave behind. In the book Picking Cotton, the book’s focus, Jennifer, has a boyfriend named Paul. Paul is a member of the high society and goes to a picture perfect university. Paul seems perfect until his mate suffers from a brutal rape. After the fact, he shows his true colors and even asks Jennifer if she enjoyed the rape (Jennifer Thompson-Cannino, Ronald Cotton, and Erin Tornedo). This is obviously a person who has chased money rather than chased the pursuit of being a better person. There should be less focus on money for young adults.
