Why I Chose Student Council

Improved Essays
Something I have always enjoyed doing is helping people. I love the feeling that it gives me and the thought that I have just helped better someone’s life. Now as a young boy, I was often asked, what are you going to be? I never realized it then, but I have realized it now, my father. He is the reason why I want to do what I want to do, which is to become a doctor. It seems like every week I hear someone, whether it’s at a store or at the YMCA, say you 're the doctor 's son, and I listen to them express their deepest gratitude of my father. As his son, I have never felt prouder of him. He truly cares for his patients as if they were his own family, and I hope that I can become the doctor and the person that he is.

Something that I have struggled with is essentially what I’m excited for in college: meeting new people. I love meeting people and making friends, but the process of making friends scares me. Nevertheless, I have done multitudes of things to help counteract this problem such as getting a job, volunteering at my local church, and joining student council. Doing those tasks has helped me overcome this obstacle and helped get myself out into the world and learn skills that I need to know for college such as leadership. Joining student council was pivotal in the evolvement of my leadership skills since my leadership skills were truly lacking before I joined student council. But after being a member for three years I have become a true representative of my students. What I figured out was that the key to becoming a great leader and a great representative was by listening. Listening was how I found out what my fellow students wanted and needed to make school more enjoyable for them. Without this skill, I never would have known what homecoming theme my students wanted and issues that students had that needed to be addressed by the school administration. The skills I have learned in student council were also key in …show more content…
I always tried to be very personable with people and help them in anyway possible. However, my greatest strength is to a certain extent my greatest fault. I see it is my moral obligation to help and care for people, but sometimes I care for people a little too much and people take advantage of me, but I don’t blame the folks for doing it. I figured out that I portrayed myself as the wrong type of help. Now, I am more invested in as just the emotional support of people and not the monetary support. I figured, I am going to college, and I need some money to pay for gas. Nevertheless, I still hope to become a doctor even with the rising college and medical school tuitions. My first step in achieving that goal is attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in biology. To achieve this goal, I will study constantly to earn great grades since medical school is very competitive to get into. Once I graduate with a bachelor 's in biology, I will apply to medical schools in the Midwest region. After I get accepted to a medical school, I have to go through the medical school’s rigorous four-year program, go through a four-year residency program, and then possibly a fellowship program depending on what type of doctor I want to become. I know this will take years of hard work and dedication in accomplishing my goal of becoming a doctor,

Partaking in the student council organization has allowed for personal and leadership growth, and is comprised of plentiful downfalls and successes. But I believe that it requires missteps and prosperity to learn and grow as a leader. In terms of strength, my skills in proper and adequate delegation tasks have contributed to the successes of my class. However, delegating and simply telling others what to do is not leadership, it is the act of collaborating with one another to execute an event or achieve the goal. Ultimately, I believe that it is my ability to uplift and empower others as my greatest asset.…

My gut sank to an unbearable low as I watched my thirty-two-year-old mother require support to limp just five steps to the restroom; cancer stripped her of life. At twelve-years-old, I felt distraught in my inability to save her and return the endless love that my Haitian parents poured into my nurturing. However, the hope the physicians brought us has inspired me to become a doctor so that I, too, can serve as an envoy of hope to sufferers of illness. My father is a physician I strive to be like. In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

The story of how I came into this world inspires me to become an Obstetrician Gynecologist because I am determined to pay it forward. My parents come from a traditional African household where males are seen as superior and this fueled my father's passion for a son. But what my father didn't know was that his dream was soon to be deferred yet again because my mother was pregnant with me, her third girl to be exact, and still no son. My mother knew from previous ultimatums that my father would force her to abort me if he found out it was another girl, so she united with her obstetrician gynecologist to keep my gender a secret from my father. This risk and unimaginable act of kindness the obstetrician gynecologist did for my mother saved my life…
