The proximate causes of childhood obesity such as those highlighted by Professor Baur (2012) and Young (2012), once critically examined show their inherent origins and connections to structural factors. The scale and depth examined as well as personal ideological standings can alters the interpretation and defining the factors can then become difficult.
In her ABC 7:30 Report interview, Professor Baur identifies both proximate and structural factors that contribute to childhood obesity. Baur’s interview suggests the inability to make safe and healthy decisions, suggesting that agency no longer remains in the hands of the consumer. While the conventions of the medium restricted the appropriate depth to be explored, this point is comprehensively covered in Baur’s co-authored publication Obesity in children and young people: a crisis in public health (2004), which aligns more with the themes explored in Young’s publication.
Possibly due to the restrictions of the ABC 7.30 Report, Professor Baur was not able to discuss many of the proximate and structural factors that contribute to childhood obesity. Some relevant examples that were missing include cultural eating habits, limitations due to specificity of geographical location and issue of local food production.
While Baur alludes to the powers behind the scenes, it is Young’s interpretation that focuses heavily on the contours of power. Young’s analysis highlights some of the structural issues that Baur was not able to explore i.e. the relationships between the corporate and political spheres. Young extends on this point by noting the power over “national policy makers and international institution of global governance”(Young 2012. 12), suggesting the roles that major corporations have in pre selecting what consumers have to choose from and the contents and affordability of
