Is Britain Racist Essay

The BBC THREE Is Britain Racist? (2015) documentary is an investigation conducted by Mona Chalabi into the degree of racism occurring in British society. Racism is any form of prejudice attitude resulting from the belief that those belonging to another race are inferior compared to oneself (Chandler & Munday, 2011: 349). The documentary suggests that Britain is racist and Chalabi concludes “society has shaped our brains in racist ways whether we realise it or not” (Is Britain Racist, 2015). This statement implies that the representations of race in the media are negative, and they lead to subconscious racial prejudices.

(2015) documentary identifies that negative opinions are prominent in British society. Chalabi's investigation observes how a Muslim woman wearing a niqab is treated by other members of the community. The woman is subjected to hate speech as she is called a “b*****d” and told to “**** off back to [her] own country”. This outcome indicates that the effects of the hypodermic needle model are occurring, which is when 'the stimuli forwarded by [a medium] convey an immediate response from the audience' (Baya, 2012: 155). This idea of a passive audience, however, was refuted by David Morley who claims that audiences can negotiate their own meaning of media texts (Morley, 1992 quoted p.156). The idea that not all audiences consume messages in the same way explains why the participants of Chalabi's investigation were met with both positive and negative responses from the public. Conversely, the hypodermic needle model explains why although Chalabi feels she is responding to negative representations of race with ‘that's not true’ it is discovered that in her brain she has 'a learned response to associate […] black individuals with fear' (Is Britain Racist?, 2015). However, one must remember that this is an assessment carried out on an individual thus to apply to all would be

Media has capitalized on the white power structure capitalized on white people being superior in certain characteristics, traits, and attributes of other racial backgrounds. Moreover, the effect comes into play is that whiteness becomes hidden as an issue within society. So “by viewing whiteness as a rhetorical construction we avoid searching for any essential nature to witness”(Nakayama & Krizek, 1995). So whiteness is a strategic rhetoric that positions those who are included in a particular way. Subsequncly, this is due to how communication is impoverished within cultures.…

For centuries our society has been fighting for equality of race, at times facing great setback and strife. Walking through certain cities today, they seem so fully integrated that it would be hard to remember that they were once otherwise. However, as you travel deeper into the south that centuries old racism becomes more and more prevalent. It is not uncommon to see a confederate flag outside someone’s house or flying behind a teenage boy’s lifted truck. It wouldn’t be shocking to hear a racial slur leave an old man’s mouth.…

Racism has become extremely prevalent in Australia’s modern-day society. We are able to say this because there is an astounding amount of evidence to support this. Firstly, Mungo Man and Woman verify that there was Aboriginal life in Australia over 60,000 years ago, found by using carbon dating technology. This means that we can understand that they had a culture and society of their own before the Europeans arrived and abolished it.…

Scotland – as all societies in the modern world – is a multi-ethnic society. Scotland’s Census (2011) showed that 96 per cent of the population in Scotland was represented by people whose ethnicity was reported as “White” (“White Scottish”, “White British”, “Irish”, “Polish” and “Other Whites”) and the remaining 4 per cent was represented by individuals from ethnic minority groups (“Asians”, “Africans”, “Caribbean”, “Mixed/multiple ethnicity” and “Other ethnicities”) , that is “groups that are singled out and treated unequally on the basis of their cultural or physical differences…” (Marger, 2008, p.291). Pilkington (2003) argued that as a result of Post War immigration (phenomenon that introduced multi-ethnicity into societies), immigrants, who are mostly from ethnic minority groups, are in a position of disadvantage in terms of employment and housing and they are often referred to as the cause of social problems; in other words, for decades, ethnic minority groups have been experiencing social and economic inequalities. Unfortunately, nowadays, this situation does not seem to change.…

Mamdani also explains that Culture Talk “assumes that every culture has a tangible essence that defines it, and it then explains politics as a consequence of that essence. Culture Talk after 9/11, for examples, qualified and explained the practice of “terrorism” as “Islamic””. There are two versions of Culture Talk, “It claims to interpret politics from culture, in the present and throughout history, but neither version of Culture Talk is substantially the work of a historian”. Racial Privilege and Stereotype Racial Stereotyping and Privilege has been a big cause throughout the history of the world, whether it be the discrimination that took place within a political force or just dating back to 1942 with the Europeans coming over and taking land from the Native Americans. There has always been some form of a racial group using the given “privilege” that they have in order to dominate a less powerful group. In today’s society, many people are judged based on the color of their skin and bringing this matter to attention is something worth investing in, which is why this topic was chosen because throughout our history as a nation and even as a world there has always been a form of “Racial Privilege and Stereotyping”…

Philip discusses the inequality with-in Canada between different cultures and races; one of the main points being that the Canadian government only recognizes English and French in the constitution while omitting Native culture. Philips believes that the Canadian ideology puts importance of white European cultures and values over any other race including but not limited to: Native and African. Examples used to disclose the inequality amongst cultures and preference toward white supremacy are Canada’s…
