Is Beowulf Still Relevant Today

Beowulf Essay The famous story of the legendary Beowulf is in the form of an archetypal epic. Although the story took place long ago many of the ideas and events that happen in the epic are still relevant today. Beowulf the leader of the geats. The man who single handedly defeated Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon while keeping the people around him safe. Beowulf represents many things in today’s world. Some of the things this epic represents is our ideas of the qualities of a hero, good and evil, our place in society, nature’s indifference to mankind, who we can count on, the dangers of pride and greed, and the importance of loyalty, courage, and faith. Just as Beowulf went through life and learned many important lessons from his experiences we also journey through our lives learning from all our experiences. One of the things from Beowulf that is still relevant in today’s world are the qualities we look for in a hero. We want someone who has a strong will. Someone who looks out for the greater good of others while keeping themselves together and always has an answer or a way to things. Beowulf is a great example of this. Just as in Beowulf how Beowulf is the hero and all the other people are just townspeople and part of his army, we are just like that. Most people are just a regular, everyday people while our Beowulf's are the army, the police, firemen, or whoever we consider our heros to be. Another close comparison is nature’s indifference to mankind. In Beowulf the land and forests get destroyed or just cleared out either by the monsters such as the dragon or by the people themselves wanting to build new buildings. We do the same exact thing.
