Is Being Racist Advantageous?

The ethical issues of racism are centered around the questions we mentioned in our presentation. Is it necessary to resolve racism, Is being racist morally forbidden, Is being racist advantageous. To explain the significance of each question I’ll start by examining the first question. The point to asking if it was necessary to resolve racism was to provoke discussion on whether or not racism is tolerable in society and if not why. This question could lead to confront possible steps in resolving racism and really just get people to talk about the subject instead of shrugging it off. The point to asking if being racist was morally forbidden was to show that it’s pretty common place to say racism is wrong but people rarely go further than that. We wanted to explore why it was wrong and provoke discussion to show similarities in beliefs of the modern era. Finally the reason behind asking if being racist was advantageous was to explore the undeserved privileges granted to some. We wanted to really focus on why people are having a hard time confronting racism, on example being white privilege and how a large majority of white people have a problem accepting that there are racial problems in their communities. Through this question we explored one reason racism is prevalent in a modern and …show more content…

Slavery does not happen to people today, as most of the countries in the world have set rules to settle equality between ethnicities. Slavery isn’t much of a problem anymore, but racism is. Although most of the world set laws of equality between ethnicities, there is still a majority of the world that is racist.…

Civil Rights activist, Alveda King, once said, "Racism springs from the lie that certain human beings are less than fully human. It's a self-centred falsehood that corrupts our minds into believing we are right to treat others as we would not want to be treated. " Many people, regardless of race, have demonstrated this repeatedly throughout history. The Holocaust, for example. Harboring strong, yet unnecessary hatred towards Jews, Hitler had millions of them put in concentration camps and wiped out during WWII.…

He believes that “instead of reinforcing mythologized cultural differences” as multiculturalism does, Canada needs to administer anti-racism education (McCreary). McCreary explains the importance of anti-racist education in that it goes further than merely addressing the obvious cultural differences in Canada; anti-racist education further delves into how and why “these differences came to be vested in hierarchies of social, economic, and political power” (McCreary). While Multiculturalism appeases to our tastes by introducing new foods and by allowing us to freely partake in various cultural festivities, it does not solve racism in Canada. Taking McCreary’s argument further, Dr. Sunera Thobani of the University of British Columbia criticizes Canada’s Multiculturalism policy for actually promoting segregation and racism, as explained in her article “Multiculturalism Displaces Anti-Racism, Upholds White Supremacy.” In particular, she believes that multiculturalism upholds white supremacy, therefore ensuing racism against all other ethnicities.…

Americans today tend to value and empower the media as a source, while the focus of this source is on the methods of democracy and racial politics stated in U.S., which U.S. government claims on them as its main and central values in politics. Whereas Spencer argues in his article “Representation”, it is debatable that these policies have not been applied as they supposed to. Accordingly there are a lot of visible minority races whom have been discriminated and by report racism appears to be a big issue to them. In this article, Spencer claims that growth in multiculturalism haven't change the perception of racism enough and he brought couple of examples from international case studies in white western regions(MESAL). He expands his opinion based on his observations which emphasizes on the cultural idea of superior whiteness race and its dominance in comparison with other races.…

Modern day Canada can be described as a vibrant, cultural and racial mosaic however, by no means did Canada’s past reflect today’s predicament, as several members of the Canadian population were subjected to immense levels of discrimination. Like our American counterpart, Canada had struggled to obtain racial equality for all, but the 20th century proved to be a step in the right direction as there were remarkable factors that drove social change in the country. A reductionist view would not do justice to said change as there were a wide array of aspects that helped to improve social conditions in the country. Modernizing elites such as The Ontario Black History Society and The Coloured Women’s Club of Montreal, the steady yet captivating leadership…

Some people will argue that racism is not an issue today. This is very untrue. Racism is not as bad as it was and is getting better but still exists. People should learn from the history of racism to better understand it, so that, this generation doesn't sound ignorant. Racism has been a huge part of our history: Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, the Supreme Court tried to desegregate schools; Shelley v. Kraemer, the Supreme Court denied a black person to buy property in certain areas; loving vs Virginia, Virginia made a law prohibiting a black person to marry a white person.…

Racial and gender inequality in Canada has been ignored for a long time and it is a topic that should have more awareness put towards it. Women and people of colour in Canada are treated differently, are in poverty more because of income inequality opposed to their counterpart, or caucasian men. This is unfair to many people, and I along with many others believe everyone should be treated equally. Then what’s the problem, and why is there still inequality if almost everyone wants the same thing? The problem is that not many people are actually doing anything about this issue so not much is changing.…

An Ever Changing Country Although it has been decades since slavery ended, racism is still a profound controversy in the United States today. Charles Blow describes some of these levels of racism and its effects on people in the United States in his article “White America’s ‘Broken Heart’”. The article, as can be deciphered by the title, is about how white Americans today are handling the changing situations of equality in the United States. Blow published this article February 4, 2016, on The New York Times’ Opinion Pages on their website. Many Americans assume that racism is almost completely gone in today’s society, but Blow believes that it still lingers and is affecting the health of Caucasians in America.…

The issue I tend to investigate is overt racism vs covert racism. Covert racism is when it’s out in the open and overt is not openly acknowledged or displayed. While racism is in general a negative part of our society because it divides groups, the issue here is it better for people to display their content for other groups or is racism better off hidden. So the question is covert racism or overt racism more harmful to society is what I will investigate. The reason I want to explore this topic is because I am a young African-American woman living in the south and my mother faced racism in her life.…

Racism has been around for many years and it is an issue that has never been fully resolved, although some may believe that it has. It is not uncommon to see crimes being mentioned everywhere but thanks to the media, we have seen the many incidents occurring recently involving white cops and black men, hence we have come to realize how racist we really are as a society and how big of an issue racism actually is even now. In the textbook Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory, we are introduced to some of the first sociologists and their theories. Two sociologists that are relevant to present issues about racism would be Emile Durkheim and W.E.B. Du Bois.…
