Comic books have engaged young people since the Golden Age of the 1930s to 40s and continue to engage young readers of the 21st century. Little did we know that according to Dr Fredric Wertham, M.D., comic books seduce the innocent. He was so concern about how the child’s mind reacts to the ‘badly drawn, badly written and badly printed…’ comics, that he set up a clinic and his findings indicated that comic books were a major cause of juvenile delinquency. Batman wants order in Gotham, while the Joker wants chaos. Batman appears sane and moral whereas the Joker is insane and morally deprived. Batman wants peace and the Joker craves conflict. While watching this movie, Batman starts to wonder if he actually wants peace and this poses the question; if Batman somewhere deep down, is he as insane as the Joker? Fredric Wertham M.D. correct when he describes our youth as juvenile delinquents? In our society, with violence, drugs, corruption and abuse vivid in our everyday life, it is a wonder that the results are not worse. If we were to stereotype our youth based on what they read and watch, then maybe the blame should begin with the power of media and technology. The freedom of expression that we view in cartoons, comics, computer games and films present the villain as someone that is willing to stand for what they believe. A person that challenges the ‘norm’ and can be radical in their ideas. This is why the comic world makes millions of dollars, it is an industry that their readers can’t get enough of.
