Steroids are substances that possess tissue-building qualities that speed up cellular processes. They are intended for medical use, aiding in treating many injuries, diseases, and ailments, but are often misused by athletes and people who would abuse steroids regenerative abilities. The substances most often used for athletic enhancement are anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids enhance endurance, increase muscle development, and improve strength in the user. Men and women take advantage of these properties for personal gain or to gain an unfair competitive advantage. But the use of steroids can carry serious side effects. Addiction, sterility, shrunken body parts, heart disease, liver disease, kidney damage, stunting of growth, mood swings, and increased aggressiveness have all been linked to prolonged steroid use. Females in particular may experience deepening of the voice, abnormal menstrual cycles, diminished breasts, and growth of facial or body hair in addition to the previously mentioned side effects. While these health problems are terrible consequences for the individual, they can also have a detrimental effect on the sport in which they compete. PED’s have a myriad of consequences for both users and non-users. They are a poison that is spreading through the bloodstream of sports, bleeding down into younger and younger levels. Many colleges and even high schools now test for the presence of these substances. To stop the spread of these dangerous drugs, it has to start at the top. Professional sports leagues and associations must crack down even harder than they already do on not just the users, but the distributers and suppliers. Many young athletes see and hear about superstar professionals taking these drugs, and without completely comprehending what they are putting into their bodies, follow suit.
