Being an atheist in the south can bring a lot of trouble and conflict. It is a viewpoint that is less accepted than most others. There are many misconceptions about what exactly atheism is. Some people believe atheism is a religion, but atheism is simply the lack of belief in a god, gods, deities, or any supernatural forces. The beliefs atheist have can vary from individuals and are generally different.
People who identify as atheist may have very different beliefs, but generally there are a few certain beliefs that are the same. One would be that they do not believe anything without empirical evidence. A lot of time this is what leads people to become atheist. They will see the flaws and lack of evidence in religion and slowly start to realize that religion may be wrong or does not have the right answers. Atheist do not believe in any supernatural forces either. They do not believe in an afterlife and usually just look towards science for answers. This does not mean they blindly put faith into science like religious people do in religion, but will observe and look at the evidence before making their own opinion.
Most people usually view atheist as a big group just trying to bring religion down, but that is not true at all. Most atheist have a very humanist point of view. Helping others and insuring equal rights for everyone is a very important belief. It is especially important to me. I really like helping other people who cannot help themselves.
