The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is written by a curious journalist, Rebecca Skloot, who spent a portion of her life learning about a woman by the name of Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta Lacks died of cervical cancer in 1951, but her cells lived on. One thing that was most shocking throughout this reading is the extent to which people will go in order to gain knowledge. It is surprising how many scientists, doctors, and other medical professionals treated patients unfairly so that they could benefit themselves. I am going to explain a series of events that were mentioned in this book that resulted in exploitation.…

Ophthalmologist Stephen Kaufman identifies the cause of these issues being the rabbit is an inappropriate and inaccurate model for human ocular damage. The rabbit is used because they are inexpensive, docile and have large eyes. The anatomical differences between a human and rabbit eyelid include a more permeable epithelial (surface) layer, thicker bowman’s membrane, higher pain threshold, less efficient tearing system, a nictitating membrane (third eyelid), thinner corneal, higher susceptibility of alkaline materials and a larger cornea. These physiological differences between rabbit and humans demonstrate the cause of inaccurate and varied results. An experiment was conducted by comparing the results of 281 human ocular toxicity exposures to 14 house products with findings from the Draize test.…

There are many alternatives to animal testing and excuses need to stop being made to keep animal testing in business. It may seem like it is the only option, but there are so many new ways to do the exact same test in ways which do not involve animals at all. It is cruel and inhumane to keep animals in small cages and not only physically, but also mentally harm them. Artist Leonardo Da Vinci once said, “The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.” The time for animals to be treated similarly to humans can be…

Colin was born vulnerable to a deadly disease that prevented his body from using the sugar stored in his body. These animals are subjected to forced feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, infliction of burns and wounds to study the healing process and effects and remedies. Among the cruelest experiments is the Draize eye test which evaluates irritation by shampoos and other products to the eyes. During this experiment rabbits are restrained and their eyelids are held open by clips for multiple days which leads to the death of 50% of rabbits used (Scientific American, "Do Cosmetic Companies Still Test on Live Animals?," scientificamerican.com). According to peta.org, more than 100 million animals are slaughtered in U.S. laboratories. Those that have the heart to inflict this type of brutality do this immobilizing them in restraint devices for hours, drilling holes into their skulls having their spinal cords crushed. (peta.org). Other than the physical atrocities that humans are forcing vulnerable animals into, they are also isolated from their own kind, confined to barren cages, and therefore, become severely traumatized.…
