What is Alzheimer’s disease? It is a progressive mental deterioration that can occur in middle or old age. It is the most common cause of premature senility. Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia and can cause problems with thinking and behavior as well. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time. It can inhibit daily task such as remembering where you put something. I can cause you to forget familiar faces as well. Let’s take a look at the basics of dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Some of the basics of Alzheimer’s is that it is the most common form of dementia. Dementia is a common term for memory loss and other things that interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases. The majority of people with this disease are 65 and older, but be advised it is not a normal part of aging. This disease worsens over time because it is a progressive disease. Early stages have mild memory loss but late stages, people cannot carry on conversations or respond to their environment. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. People with Alzheimer’s live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others. But some people have been known to live up to 20 years. Everyone is different and handle each disease differently. Alzheimer’s has no known cure but there are treatments for the symptoms to slow the progression down. Now lets take a look at the effects on the brain.
