Is A College Education Very Important Today? Economy And Society?

A college education is very important in today’s economy and society. For some, it is nearly impossible to be successful in life without a college degree. This is the view of people in many different countries. Gary Burtless says that “The economic reward [for] attending and completing college has probably never been higher.”(qtd Dews,F) To catch up to those countries that are superior to us in technology and economy, America has to change. Which means the job market is going to change as well. “As opposed to generations of the past, high school graduates today are unable to obtain the number of high-paying jobs that were once available.”(qtd McGuire, J) America used to have a factory-based economy where people could get jobs in an assembly line or construction workers and make good payoff of it. Now that robots have taken most simple jobs in factories around the world, there is a shortage of skilled workers for higher level jobs. Most of these jobs require a 2 or 4 year college education. Even careers such as an artist, singer, professional mime, are easier with a college education in that field. I am not saying that you have to go to college to live a good life, just look at people like Charles Culpeper, he dropped out of high school and is now the owner and CEO of Coca Cola. The reason why college is such a big issue now is because back in the 19th century, colleges were for teacher-training or medical diplomas. People didn’t need to go to college to become a farmer or…
