The last thing a responsible gun owner needs to know how to do is clean a gun. Though this is not the most exciting or fun part of gunmanship, it is undoubtedly the most important if you wish to keep your gun in pristine, working condition. There is a lot that goes into cleaning and maintaining a gun properly. One would be the amount of times a gun needs to be maintained. The amount of times the gun was used, the type of bullets that were used, and the type of gun are the biggest contributing factors of how often a gun needs to be cleaned (Adelman 2). However, no matter what happens, a gun should be cleaned regularly after shooting sessions in order to keep degradation to a minimum. In order to do this, certain items need to be used. Though a solvent is need for cleaning guns, the way to get the gunk exposed is to string a wire brush through the barrel. This clears out all of the bigger pieces of residue out, all the while exposing the little dust-sized particles of powder. When this is done, attach a slotted patch holder to a rod and dip a patch in the solvent. The patch holder makes it easier to keep the solvent-covered patch in place and steady. Run the rod back and forth through the barrel until the entire inside of the barrel is glossy and slick with solvent. After the barrel is shiny and clean, attach a dry patch to the patch holder and run that through the barrel multiple times. If the patch becomes black with powder residue, make sure to change it out so the barrel isn’t being dried with a dirty patch, negating all the work that was already done. After drying out the solvent with the patch, remove the patch holder from the rod and replace it with a bore mop. What this tool does is fine tune the cleaning process. It polishes the inside of the barrel causing it to last much longer than a dirty
