Several years ago, author and motivational speaker, Allen Klein visited a hospice in San Francisco. He came across an elderly woman diagnosed with a terminal disease that expressed her desire that once she dies, she wants her husbands room repainted, with her ashes mixed in with the paint. Klein was confused at this odd request and asked why she would want such a thing. The old woman replied, “So I can look down at my husband and see if there’s any hanky-panky going on” (Horovitz, 2017, para. 22). This elderly woman is still making herself and others laugh, even at the end of her life. She went on to talk about the importance of laughter and how, “Laughter is the best medicine, unless you have diarrhea” The elderly woman was not wrong. Laughter has not been acknowledged as a way to increase health, when it does so much for one’s body. One in every four deaths in the United States is the result of a heart attack (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015, para. 1). …show more content…
Let’s say someone makes a hilarious joke that causes you to laugh. While laughing, your body releases endorphins, chemicals that promote happy and good feelings within the body. While you are laughing, “the body produces and releases these natural chemicals that work to make you feel good and even give you a brief period of euphoria. This helps to improve mood and lower stress levels” (Hansen, 2015, para. 11). Due to endorphins being released, your levels of cortisol, epinephrine, and dopamine, chemicals all involved in stress, dramatically decrease. When these hormones are reduced, your stress level will also be reduced. In an interview conducted with M.D. Michael Miller he states, “The old saying that 'laughter is the best medicine,' definitely appears to be true when it comes to protecting your heart” (Murray, 2009, para. 2). Miller is referring to the fact that laughter decreases stress, which has overwhelming effects on your

“The feud might, perhaps, have died down or been compromised if the personal ill will of the two men had not stood in the way” (Saki 83), this quote really shows how two the main characters were foolish and instead of ending the feud between them, they kept trying to kill each other. Ulrich and Georg were both very foolish and kept trying to find each other. On page 83 author Saki states “each had hate in his heart and murder uppermost in his mind,” (Saki 83) this also shows how Georg and Ulrich kept trying to find each other instead of ending the feud. What the two main characters didn't know was that soon later an inconvenience of them being together would happen and their eyes would open of how foolish they were.…

All of these stories have some sort of irony in them. For example, in Fahrenheit 451 Bradbury starts of the novel with situational irony. He states “It was a pleasure to burn”(Bradbury 1). This is situational irony because Montag is later introduced as a fireman, and in today’s society a fireman is someone who puts out fire, not start them. Another type of irony in this novel is dramatic irony.…

He also intentionally gives those examples to set up an argument that can not be disputed. Examples such as, the changing of butterfly wing colors through technology, advertised stamps in the wet sand at public beaches and corporations logos being maintained at local parks. Beginning an article with a rhetoric introduction gives the readers a story to associate with the problem.…

The Use of Irony A Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe is bursting with irony. Poe includes both verbal and dramatic irony, which is developed to grasp the audience’s attention. The names of the characters contain irony too. For example, Fortunato’s name means the “fortunate one” however, unless being left in a catacomb to die is something to be fortunate about, he is not. Montresor uses verbal irony while luring his “friend” Fortunato into the catacombs using his vanity of wine.…

Thomas C. Foster says that “irony trumps everything” (244). There is a deep irony to Harper Lee’s novel when it comes to the attitude of the townspeople towards the actions of Adolf Hitler in Germany and the Tom Robinson case that’s happening right in their backyard. Cecil Jacobs comes to class with a news article in hand that discusses the persecution of the Jews in Germany. Then Miss Gates describes that the United States is a democracy, while Germany is a dictatorship. She continues by saying, “over here we don’t believe in persecuting anybody.…

One of Robin William’s most memorable quotes comes from the movie “The World’s Greatest Dad” when he tells a talk show audience that “Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. " We find it ironic that Williams, who has made the world laugh, saw no other way of solving his own problems and most sadly, took his own life this week. Williams, one of the most respected and talented actors of our time was well known for his humorous and inspiring roles such as a woman in Mrs. Doubt fire, a therapist in Good Will Hunting and a radio DJ in Good Morning Vietnam. It is a strange parallel that in his personal life he had been suffering from long term depression, alcohol and substance abuse since the 1960’s. In this rather skewed light, we may well ask ourselves, “Is laughter really the best medicine”?…
