The Masque of the Red Death Edgar Allan Poe’s short story,The Masque of the Red Death, is a work of literary art. It takes place in the early 1300’s when the Black Death, or in this case the Red Death, plagued Europe and filled the air with the stench of death. Death was a recurring theme in Poe’s short story. Prince Prospero and the people in the castle attempted to escape, but they were proven wrong in the end.
