Santiago’s viewing of the pyramids and his discovery of his treasure is a very fitting stopping point for the book as all of the book’s events hint at and lead up to these moments. If Santiago had found his treasure without traveling the Sahara Desert, then it wouldn’t mean anything to him except for monetary wealth; through his journey, he learns the Language of the World, he learns how to harness the Soul of the World, he learns new languages such as Arabic, and on top of all of those achievements, he finds the lovely Fatima, whom he argues is a better discovery than his own Personal Legend. Without this long, emotional, and trying course of events and accomplishments, the treasure would not be worth nearly as much to the boy as it is by the end of the novel. Although some people might believe that Santiago’s whole trip was rendered pointless as the treasure was revealed to be in the church where the novel had begun, they must remember that there are multiple lessons wrapped around Santiago’s travels, not only on his continental path, but also on his spiritual journey towards enlightenment. Santiago learns the location of his treasure when one of the refugees explains that “[he] had a recurrent dream, too,” about an abandoned church with a sycamore where the sacristy once resided (Coelho163). Throughout the whole book, Santiago is being guided toward the Pyramids, and multiple people tell Santiago that his treasure will be at the Pyramids, yet when he gets to the Pyramids, he gets beat nearly to death in addition to being indirectly told where his treasure is. Santiago does not feel very content disclosing his information about his reoccurring dream, but much like the alchemist when he told the three tribesmen of the Philosopher’s Stone and the Elixir of Life, they believed he was crazy so they spared his life.
