Irony In Lord Of The Flies

Irony: At the beginning, Rainsford says to Whitney: “The world is made up of two classes--the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are hunters.” I find this Ironic, since after Rainsford goes on the island, he becomes the huntee, and Zaroff is the hunter. Rainsford is talking about luck, and in this story, he has next to zero luck. He loses his ship, his pipe, his access to the real world, his hunter friend, and gets chased down by a crazy killer who kills for fun. I think that the fact that he had little luck helps convey the message of the story which is: Perseverance pays off, since even without luck, Rainsford perseveres long and hard enough, until he evades Zaroff for three days, and fights him on the last day.

Irony: When Rainsford learns that Zaroff hunts humans, he is surprised, then Zaroff continues and says: "I have electricity. We try to be civilized here." This is quite ironic, as he is saying he is civilized, as he hunts down humans just like him just for the thrill of it. No civilized man would kill humans for no reason. In society, we see foxes as huntee's. Lots of people in our world hunt foxes down. On the other hand, in many examples, the cat is a hunter, hunting down mice. When Rainsford is saying this, he is essentially expressing his feeling that he is tired of being hunted down, and he wishes to switch his position with Zaroff, and hunt Zaroff down. This quote was the first time that Rainsford had went past his nervousness, and had decided to do something to change his situation.
