“the story of an hour” most effectively employs the use of irony. Chopin’s brilliant ways of
using the irony in the story was the main reason why his readers can’t always predict the path of
the story as they are constantly can’t be sure of the twists and turns it will take them to. In "The
Story of an Hour", there are lots of instants when the irony took its place in the story. One of
these instants was, "assure himself of its truth by a second telegram" (Chopin 326). Which as a
reader it seat me to believe Mrs. Mallard 's husband surely died, and it was a shock when at the
end it appeared that he was alive .

Mallard reacted in a very ironic way it wasn’t not predict in any way that she will turn to feel the
way she did, the way she described her surroundings when she was in her room was shocking
as it was full of happiness and optimistic pictures .her way of describing the tops of trees, "all
aquiver with the new spring life", and describing air as, "delicious breath of rain" (Chopin 327).
None of this shows a depressed or sad wife, it clearly shows that she saw her new and better
beginning after the death of her husband and how ironic that happiness can be born of a tragedy.
She says, "Free, free, free!", it was obvious that she has come to a conclusion that she is
now free from her marriage, and after this happiness we can call it an unhappy marriage that now
she no longer has to live through it; "But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession
of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to
