The way he describes it to the readers let us know that it was set up. Poe uses really good details talking about the different things that were down there. He describes it as, “in its surface were two iron staples, distant from each other about two feet, horizontally. From one of these depended a short chain, from the other a padlock” (Poe). One would think that if Fortunato was to see that he would have an idea about what Montresor was about to do to him but he was too intoxicated. If you were reading it you could tell Poe was had an attitude toward the situation he was in. Montresor did not care about the pain that Fortunato was in regardless of all the sounds Fortunato was making. The way Poe explains his details and talks about things leaves readers wanting to know more about what’s going to happen.
