Iron Vs Nonheme Iron

Iron is indeed a crucial element. As you mentioned, it is part of core parts of our bodies like hemoglobin and oxygenation of cells. According to the National Institute of Health (2016), there are two forms of dietary iron heme and nonheme. Nonheme iron comes from plants and iron-fortified foods, and other foods like seafood, poultry and meat have both heme and nonheme iron (NIH, 2016). Therefore, the richest supplies of heme iron in the diet come from lean meat and seafood. According the NIH (2016), in the US, half of dietary iron comes from foods that we eat daily like bread, cereal and other grains. Therefore, when people go on those low carb diets, they need to watch out for their iron supply to make sure that they do not become anemic.
