Has environment pressure of sunlight contributed to the variation in iris pigmentation? Only 10,000 years ago, someone who lived near the Black sea developed a mutation, which resulted in blue iris pigmentation (Eiberg, 2008). The iris consists of small connective tissue surrounded by muscular structure with a central opening known as the pupil (Sturm, 2008). This pupil allows the eye to control the amount of light, which enters to allow they eye to focus the lens to the retina. This sequence allows for a sense of vision (Sturm, 2008). The pupil contracts as conditions lighten and dilate as conditions darken. These factors influence the perception of color as well as the iris pigmentation (Larsson, 2008). The iris color is determined …show more content…
This gene is responsible for limiting the production of melanin resulting in a derivation in iris pigmentation from the brown origin. According to research done at the University of Copenhagen, albinism is the result of a mutated OCA2 gene which leads to a lack of melanin based pigmentation in the skin, hair and eyes (Troelsen, 2008). Statistically, the OCA2 1/1 homozygote diplotype is found at 65% frequency in blue-eyed individuals vs. only 9.5% of the brown-eyed individuals (Duffy, 2006). Similar to the way increased melanin in skin helps protect against harmful UV light, increased melanin in the iris protects against UV light, and decreases exposure sensitivity (Duffy, 2006). The lack of melanin in the iris results in blue pigmentation, which is most common in northern Europe (Duffy, …show more content…
Iris Color and Associated Pathological Ocular Complications: a Review of Epidemiologic Studies provided information describing the effects on the eyes of excess exposure to UV in addition to the description of the eye structure. Human pigmentation genes under environmental selection also discussed the environmental factor effect on melanin-based pigmentation. Genetics of Human Iris Colour and Patterns discusses the functions of each part of the eye in addition to the structures, which make up the eye. Winter Blues (SAD) Risk Factors details about the correlation between eye color and seasonal affective depression. In Evolution of Iris Pigmentation, I discuss the possible affiliation with environmental pressures with the variation in iris pigmentation throughout various climates and
