Opdyke lived all her life in Poland, she was raised in a catholic home and it can be said her life was ‘perfect’ until the Nazis came around. The journey she took from that point forward impacted her whole life forever. At the age of 18 Opdyke was captured by Russian soldiers, when they found her in the Polish underground which at that time was a group that defended their freedom and homeland, what the soldiers did to her and the group she was accompanied with was Terrible and shameless, they beat her and raped her and then took her to work in a hospital aiding Russian soldiers, this however was right up Opdykes alley because she was studying to become a nurse. However, she came to realize that the conditions she was working in were terrible and she could no longer bear those horrible conditions. Men would often lay there unconscious and starving, and the Germans did nothing about it, for they believed that a soldier that was sick was no good and should die, rather that be a body just laying there, the men would lay there naked in paper pads which were full of their urine and excrement and nobody would help them. Many years later Opdykes life was still very difficult because the war had separated her from her loved ones and all she really wanted was to see them, so she then Joined the Polish partisans and instead ended up getting arrested by the Russians but, the 12 jews she helped save got her out and in a way paid just a little bit of the big debt they felt they owed her. Opdyke got recognized really great because of her great act of bravery and for standing up for what she believed in even when it seemed all the world was against her.
