Iraqi Cultural Awareness This world is diverse and has many different cultures, beliefs and economies from one part of the world to another. To have an understanding of what one culture does that may offend another we must first understand what Cultural Awareness is. Cultural Awareness is the foundation of communication that involves the ability of standing back from oneself and becoming aware of our cultural values, beliefs and perceptions. Why do we operate in a certain way, how do we perceive the world, and how we react to situations differently than other cultures? Cultural awareness becomes an important factor when we have to interact with people from other cultures. People see, interpret, and evaluate things in many different ways.

What does it mean? Does the world think Americans are overactive and think too much about work? No, the statement is an opinion as how other cultures may perceive us. Having lunch or dinner could be different from one culture to the next. In Iraq, where relationships are highly valued, lunch, dinner or the simple pauses for coffee have a social connotation: people get together to talk and relax, and to get to know each other better. Though the Iraqis are of a primarily Muslim Religion to which plays a major role, there are other religions such as Christianity, which is of a minority and often threatened, or even killed due to being of a different belief. The Muslim religion is of an astounding 97 percentile as the other 3 percent is of Christian and or other religions. The Muslim religion is of two different factions, The Shi’a, which is of 60-65 percent, and the Sunni that is of 32-37 percent. The official language of Iraq is Arabic, Kurdish (official in Kurdish regions), Assyrian and Armenian. The major ethnic groups that make up Iraq are of many different cultures. The majority of the people that make up the Arabic community have an astonishing 75-80 percent of the population, while the Kurdish makes up 15-20 percent and the Turks, Assyrians and or other makes just 5
