Even with the recent terrorist events and the rise of ISIS, I feel that the US should still continue our plan to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees, but that we should be more cautious than we even planned to be. Over 90% of Syrian refugees have no affiliation or agreement with ISIS whatsoever, so in no way should we automatically assume that they are terrorists, because radicalization does not automatically associate with Muslims or Middle Eastern people. For most of Syria, they are innocently living in a war torn country and have nowhere to go. Though a few Americans claim that it “isn’t our problem” because Syria is so far away, it is our problem. We are part of the UN and our goal is to help others when we can, so why would we not help people who are in need when only a few have turned to terrorism. The question many people have is what if just one of the refugees we let in is a terrorist and compromises the safety of Americans. So, I think that the best way to let in refugees is to begin by only letting in families, and specifically women and children. ISIS is known to particularly target males between ages 15 and 30 (about) who often do not have families yet. Women and children are much less of a threat to American safety because children cannot do much to aid in terrorism, and in the views of ISIS, women should be suppressed and have no power. But, I do not think that men should be disregarded and not let in at all, because we would not want to be breaking up families and leaving more people at risk of ISIS recruitment. Because of this, I think that we should more in depth screen the men with more background checks as well before letting them into our country. In the US, I agree mostly with Hillary Clinton, because she said that we should allow refugees “only if we have as careful a screening as we can imagine”. In the process of accepting the refugees, we need to still put the priority of the American people first, so we need to be as careful as we can to be
