Ip Carbon Footprint Calculator

For this assignment, I had to calculate my carbon footprint using three different calculators: Cool Climate Network Calculator, Carbon Calculator, and the EPA Carbon Footprint Calculator. I assessed how much electricity and natural gas was used in my student house, where 7 individuals live. I got different results from each calculator. I believe that the difference in results was due to the fact that two of the calculators were based on the footprint of the average American household, such as the Barkeley calculator and the EPA calculator. For the American based calculator, I used the zip code 14301 for Niagara Falls, NY.

The calculator I found the easiest to produce results in comparison to the others was the EPA calculator, as you could input how much money you spent monthly on natural gas and electricity. However, the results were in pounds which had to be converted to metric tons of CO2. The downside of this calculator is that it based on U.S averages, as opposed to Canadian averages, and the result could vary frequently, because the monthly total for natural gas and electricity could fluctuate. For example, one month we paid $80 for utilities each, where as another month we paid $120 each. This calculator made it easier than others to see how they produced the results as it took the amount spent monthly and compounded it in how many pounds of natural

The analysis was based off how much money was spent yearly on natural gas, electricity and heating oils. However, my result for this may have been higher than the others because I had to estimate the amount paid towards heating oil and other fuels, and the square footage of my household. A positive aspect about this calculator is the fact that it provides climate solutions that are geared towards different users and populations. It is not just for individual use, but can also be used by organizations, businesses, or

Since nearly 60% of Maryland’s power comes from coal, the carbon intensity in Maryland is the 23rd highest in the United States1. With a change in power source, Maryland can increase its rate of only 5% of the energy being made from Hydropower and other renewable energy1. Maryland’s weather is also subject to change with global warming taking its place. There will be an increase in the intensity and frequency of coastline storms1.…

Readers who can relate to turning on their air conditioners and making their house as cold as an igloo, may feel a bit of guilt that they contribute to the increased level of energy consumption. The second comparison the author makes is the amount of energy Americans consume. He goes on to explain how "Part of the problem is that in recent decades, the fastest-growing U.S. cities-places like Las Vegas, Phoenix and Austin-have effectively been built on air-conditioning. (This is also true in the Middle East and Asia, and as a result, global energy consumption is soaring precisely when it needs to be lowered.) " Americans no longer use shading from trees and cross-ventilation from windows and fans to try and keep cool.…

Since the start of the modern era, energy production and consumption have been major players in the world economy. Much of the developed world’s society and industry is heavily reliant on energy production. The United States total consumption of energy is 40% coal, 27% natural gas, and 19% nuclear. All the combined renewable energy sources are less than 13% of the total energy consumption in the US (“US Energy,” 2014). As the nation’s economy grows, consumption rates rise, and energy plants produce more.…

Global Warming is beginning to drastically affect the Earth. Most people do not think about the damage they are doing to the Earth of if they do they think it is a problem for the future and not for now, which is untrue. Humans’ lifestyles should be altered to prevent further damage to Earth’s environment by reducing the demand for energy, recycling, and using less air conditioning and heat, these acts will reduce global warming. If the human race would cut down on energy usage, it would slow down global warming 's damages. In “Climate Change Science-…

This chain of reasoning that connects the reason to the claim is known as the warrant. McWilliams does this by keeping in mind that “water usage, fertilizer types, processing methods and packaging techniques” and ” far outweighs the energy it takes to transport food”. McWilliams reasons that because all of these other factors also contribute to the problems of the food industry, food miles are not the only component that make up and add to these problems. In order to back up his warrant McWilliams uses the analysis done by Rich Pirog of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture.…

According to data from the American FactFinder, the total number of housing units in New York City is estimated to be close to 3.5 million and 42%, almost half of these residential units, are located in buildings that were built in 1939 or earlier. Furthermore, more than half of the pre-1940 historic buildings are one or two family type houses. The Greening NYC’s historic buildings manual by the Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) stated in their report that solid masonry walls such as layered brick walls in historic buildings ‘’were rarely insulated. ’’ At the time, insulation was not required in building envelopes. As a result, most of the one or two family houses in NYC, including the ones with thick brick walls were rarely insulated.…

One of the most debated subjects this century is the policy on climate change. Specifically about how to go about decreasing one of the leading components most impacted by society, carbon emissions. Carbon dioxide is emitted through the combustion of fossil fuels, which is the main source of power for many of society’s technology and methods of transportation. Due to the increase use of these technologies, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased to a dangerous level, changing Earth’s climate; in turn affecting Earth’s societies and cultures. The most effective method to reduce carbon emissions in the United States would be to increase the usage of alternative energies, such as hydroelectric, wind, and solar powers, as well as devoting…

In the article, Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math, which could be found in the Rolling Stones Magazine, the author Bill Mckibben thoroughly outlines the most conventional political thinking about the issue Global Warming and Climate change that civilization and society has failed to resolve . However in order for this issue to be properly resolved, the ways of changing the methods of living and well being of society are going to be strongly impacted. First and foremost , Mckibeen uses three simple numbers s to describe the situation, Firstly, 2.8 C., 565 Gigaton’s, and 2795 Gigaton’s. Secondly, he then discusses in further detail that the fossil-fuel industry is one of the most reckless on earth, and how “there is no other force that is greater, and how these various fossil fuel companies are good for global economies” (Mckibben,2012). Mckibben intuitively exaggerates these two following factors to describe the situation more in depth and with extensive clarity.…
