How would you feel if you had no rights in your own country? In South Africa during apartheid the native blacks had their rights taken away by the Afrikaners ( Brown and Hort). Recently I watched the movie Invictus which is about South Africa during Nelson Mandela’s Presidency. I’ve also done research on the true events, time period, and people. In this paper I will prove that the film, Invictus, was historically accurate by discussing the true historical people and events, summarizing the movie, and comparing and contrasting how the movie portrayed the true people and events. The movie Invictus was directed by Clint Eastwood. It was published by the Warner Brothers in 2009. The main actors were Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman (Invictus). The movie starts out when he was just released from prison. When his motor cascade was driving by you could tell that apartheid was still in effect. On one side there were white rugby players and on the other side were black soccer players. In the next scene he was sworn in as president. His first day in office he told everyone to stay. Next Mandela tried to convince the sports association to not drop the Springbok team. In the next scene Mandela went around the world to gather support for South Africa. He meets the rugby captain to inspire him to win the world cup. The Springboks are told by the sports association that they have to teach kids how to play rugby. After that Mandela writes down the Invictus Poem that inspired him while he was in prison, and gives it to the rugby captain. The rugby captain takes his team on a field trip to Mandela’s prison on Robin Island. The Springbok beat Australia then France to go to the world cup. A plane flies over the stadium saying good luck Boks. The team sing the national anthem. The World Cup goes into overtime. Then both teams score so there tied still. At the beginning of the movie Mandela is shown being released from prison and then being inaugurated president. In real life President F.W. De Klerk lifted the ban on ANC and announced Mandela would be released from prison on February 2, 1990. Later South Africa holds is first free election and Mandela is elected the first black president (Nelson Mandela biography) In the movie Nelson Mandela came out on the field wearing Francois Pienaar’s jersey and went up to him and wished him good luck. Then in real life Mandela did wear the Springbok jersey and he spoke to each player on the team giving each one a personal message
